Linking the web…

September 14th, 2008

Many people use a number of web 2.0 sites, both for business and pleasure, but how can you make them link together.

This article will give some useful pointers to link, 4N, twitter, facebook, plaxo, google, windows live, yahoo!… together.

Phase 1 - Plaxo

The main hub to the process is Plaxo. It’s job is to work as the central link and by setting up an account with Plaxo it will link a wide range of sites - blogging, calendar, bookmarks, photo sharing, social networks, status, video/audio and wishlists.

A wide range of different sites are covered, the main ones and a few you have probably never heard of.

Handy tip! If you have a blog as part of your business website, Plaxo can link to the RSS feed and share you blog entries in the Plaxo Pulse - helping to get your message and your business website ‘out there’. You can then also link Plaxo to Digg, digg your blog entries and get double the exposure!

Phase 2 - Twitter

Plaxo and Twitter can be linked together easily and if you update the status on one, the status on the other will change almost instantely.

What Plaxo will not do however is update your Facebook status. There is a way to do this however… go to Facebook and search for twitter. The first application will allow you to link your Twitter and Facebook status, so now when you change your status they will all be updated, happy days!

Use this link to make your MS Live Messenger status the same as your twitter/facebook/plaxo status!

Phase 3 - Twitter and Forums

If you now want to put your unified status in your forum signature or indeed anywhere else, go to Twitsig and follow the simple instructions there. You will get a line of code to insert in the source for you signature and then your Twitter/Facebook/Plaxo status will appear on the bottom of every post.

Phase 4 - Google, Plaxo, MSN, Yahoo! and Outlook Calendars

Again Plaxo does the hard work here and can link all your different potential calendars together so that it will not matter which you use. Especially handy if you use both the Google calendars and Outlook and would like them to be synced.

Phase 5 - Google and your mobile phone

Assuming you’ve now linked Outlook and Google - you might want a handy way to sync you mobile phone as well. For this GooSync is the amazing answer. You install it on your phone and then you just press the button and Google and your phone will sync, which through Plaxo is already synced with Outlook and the other web calendars.

GooSync will also sync contacts and tasks.

Conclusion

If like me you use lots of different parts of the web I hope this little guide will help you link them together.
